‘End of 13th inning’ Toronto lays down the law… Ryu wins to boost PS chances

September 17, 2023 | by

The tables are now turned. If Ryu wins, his chances of making the PS increase even more. Korean baseball fans are desperate to see Ryu Hyun-jin make a PS appearance.

The Toronto Blue Jays pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind victory just one day before Hyun-jin Ryu’s scheduled start.

Toronto defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in 13 extra innings on Sunday (June 17) at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series.

Toronto has won two straight after losing four in a row. They remained in fourth place in the American League wild-card race. Toronto can clinch the third spot if the third-place Seattle Mariners lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers today. Tickets to the MLB postseason are available to the third wild card. Tied 3-3, the game came down to offense in the bottom of the 13th inning. After a scoreless frame in the top of the 13th, Toronto scored the game-winning run when Whit Merrifield hit an infield single with two outs and three runners on base.

Both teams used their bullpens on this day. Toronto used a total of five bullpen arms, including Jordan Hicks and Jordan Romano. Boston used seven bullpen arms. After the hard-fought victory, Toronto returns home to face Boston at 2:37 a.m. on April 18 at the same venue.

Both teams will need their starters to go the distance the next day, as their bullpens are significantly depleted. With no bullpen depth, it will likely come down to a starting pitching battle.

Toronto’s starter is Hyun-jin Ryu, while Boston’s is Nick Pivetta, who is 9-9 with a 4.56 ERA this season. Ryu is 3-3 with a 2.93 ERA since returning from injury in August. He’s gone at least five innings in every start except for one against the Cleveland Indians on August 8, when he was hit by a pitch and left early. He also recorded his first QS of 2023 in his last start against Texas. 먹튀검증

Ryu needs two more wins in his remaining three regular-season starts, including one against Boston, to reach 80 wins in MLB. He’s allowed a home run in four straight games, and most of those runs have been earned, so improving that will be key.

If Hyun-jin Ryu can lead Toronto to a PS, his price tag will jump even higher. MLB is already talking about the possibility of re-signing Ryu.
