Premier League side Chelsea will attempt to negotiate with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar Neymar.
“Chelsea are set to hold talks with Neymar’s representatives over the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge after he informed his club PSG that he wants to leave the club this summer,” the Daily Mail reported on Aug. 8, adding that “Chelsea hold the key to bringing Neymar to the Premier League”.
According to the outlet, Chelsea have been in constant communication with Neymar’s representatives and the player is reportedly willing to follow their advice and head to Chelsea.
Neymar, who was expected to stay with PSG for the new season after completing a pre-season tour of Asia this summer, has recently been dogged by rumors of a sudden departure.
Spain’s Mundo Deportivo reported on July 7, “Neymar and Barcelona have been linked again in recent days. Neymar will sign for Barcelona this summer and the issue is causing a lively debate within the club,” and that Neymar’s hometown team Barcelona is considering a return to the club.
“PSG have offered Neymar to Barcelona for Ousmane Dembele,” reports Spain’s Sport, suggesting that Dembele and Neymar would switch teams in a swap deal.
In other Barcelona news, Gerard Romero, one of the most trusted sources in the game, said, “The negotiations between Barcelona and Neymar are heating up. Neymar is ready to take a pay cut to return to Barcelona,” adding that Neymar is willing to take a pay cut to return to Barcelona.
France’s L’Equipe also reported that Neymar has informed PSG of his desire to leave the club. “Neymar informed president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and the club’s board of directors last weekend that he wants to leave the club this summer,” the publication said. Neymar wants to return to Barcelona more than ever,” the source explained.
“He met with his family and his agent just two days after the end of the Asia tour and we all agreed that it was time to end his time at PSG. Neymar also thinks it’s time to leave,” he said, adding that it is true that Neymar wants to leave PSG.
Neymar joined Barcelona from Brazilian side Santos in 2013 as one of the world’s top prospects and impressed in his first season with nine goals and 10 assists in La Liga and four goals and five assists in the UEFA Champions League.
The 2014/15 season saw the arrival of Luis Suarez from Liverpool, where he formed the ‘MSN Trio’ with Lionel Messi. They won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League that season, the second triple in the club’s history. In 2015/16, he was the team’s top ace while Messi was sidelined with injury. With a whopping 24 goals and 16 assists in the league alone, he led Barcelona to the league title and was touted as Messi’s heir apparent.
However, Neymar’s time with Barcelona came to an end in the 2016/17 season. After a poor season in which Barcelona missed out on the league title and the Champions League quarterfinals, Neymar wanted a new challenge and left for PSG.
The transfer fee was a buyout clause of €222 million. The buyout was set by Barcelona to ensure that they would never sell Neymar, but PSG, backed by Qatari oil money, paid a somewhat unorthodox transfer fee and a transfer that would go down in history was born. Neymar’s fee still stands as the most expensive transfer in soccer history.
Neymar arrived at PSG with high expectations, but he struggled to adapt to the rougher style of play in Ligue 1. Injuries sidelined him at crucial junctures, and PSG repeatedly failed to win the coveted Champions League.
Neymar, who was considered the next big thing after Ronaldo and Messi, never won a Ballon d’Or and is now being pushed aside by younger players like Kylian Mbappe and Elling Holland.
Now in his sixth year at PSG, Neymar looked set to continue playing for the club this season despite the ankle injury he suffered in February, joining them on their Asia tour and endearing himself to the South Korean fans by showing a close relationship with new summer signing Lee Kang-in throughout the tour.
However, he became a target of local PSG fans as he was sidelined with injuries at key junctures and failed to produce results in big games. The club has been knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 in each of the last two seasons, and PSG fans have booed Neymar at home games.
It’s one of the reasons Neymar wants to leave.
“Neymar clearly remembers the PSG fans protesting in front of his house in May,” says Lekif. It was very traumatizing for Neymar. He felt that PSG was not doing enough to protect its players from the outside world, and that he was exposed to the outside world as well.” He was also angered by the club’s lack of protection from fans.
Neymar had previously told Brazilian media in June: “I want to play for PSG this season, I have a contract with PSG. I’m always calm, even if the fans don’t have a lot of love. I want to stay at PSG, whether there is love or not.”
However, Lekif admitted that “it is true that Neymar has said that he wants to stay at PSG,” but he also said that it is true that Neymar has now changed his mind about leaving PSG.
However, it is difficult for Barcelona to realistically sign Neymar. Not only is it financially out of the question, but his personality could be a distraction in the locker room.
“Barcelona have analyzed Neymar’s potential transfer positively, but they have doubts about his performance in the team,” said Mundo Deportivo. “They have barely finished getting rid of their veterans and have created a team of young players. I think Neymar’s arrival could be a ticking time bomb,” explaining that he sees Neymar as someone who could harm the team’s atmosphere. 먹튀검증
“PSG would have to drastically reduce the transfer fee, loan him out, or give up more than half of what Neymar earns at PSG. It’s not enough to simply aspire to return to Barcelona. A decisive gesture, both sporting and financial, is required.”
Chelsea, led by American owner Todd Boley, have approached Neymar. Having already spent an astronomical amount of money rebuilding their squad last season, the Blues are looking to set the transfer market alight again this summer with the signing of Neymar.
According to the Daily Mail, “Chelsea have been considering a deal for Neymar for some time. Discussions have been ongoing and Chelsea’s position in the league and financial backing means they could offer Neymar a new way out.”
“Mauricio Pochettino worked with Neymar at PSG and got the best out of him. Pochettino is also a familiar face to Neymar,” the analyst said, adding that Pochettino’s presence could help in the race to sign Neymar.
